Iceage - Live at WFMU

Danish punk rockers Iceage stopped by Brian Turner's show on WFMU, a day or so ago, to play a live set of some choice cuts from their SUPREMELY EXCELLENT debut album New Brigade, as well as a couple of cover songs. (Apparently, there is danish band called Sexdrome? Who knew?)

Anyways, you can stream the entire performance on WFMU's blog. Thanks to Matt Sullivan of Altered Zones for the tip.

New Brigade is out now on What's Your Rupture? and Dais Records

Your New Favorite Band: The Happy Thoughts

The Happy Thoughts, a power-pop band from Lafayette, Indiana, has been growing on me these past few days. With a sound filled with catchy melodies and raw innocence, this band is definitely recommended for anyone who is a fan of Cloud Nothings, The Undertones, and/or the Yellow Pills: Refill Compilation.

For your enjoyment, here's "Never Gonna Do It" off of their recently released self-titled debut album on Hozac

Avi Buffalo - How Come?

A friend recently asked me (Yes, I do have friends), "Hey, what ever happened to Avi Buffalo ? They had that one song that you really liked, and now they're like...gone?" Well, they are back with a new 7" single via Sub Pop.

The A-side of the single, "How Come?", is extremely cogitative and straddles the line of being lo-fi. Check out the widget below to stream the song or trade your e-mail for an mp3 of the song.

Avi Buffalo's "How Come?" 7" single is out now. Pick it up at your local record store.

Review: Curren$y - Weekend at Burnie's

So within the past few years, we've been graced with a new breed of stoner rappers who aren't exactly Lil' Wayne. Guys like Wiz Khalifa and Curren$y are more Snoop Dogg type in their delivery which borders on laid back, and well while it's not deep, it's not bad, it's actually pretty fun and something to relax to, something hip hop music has forgotten about in the past decade. Coming of his vastly underrated "Pilot Talk" albums last year, Curren$y makes the jump to a new label with a bang, "Weekend At Burnies" is exactly what we've come to expect.

Jumping to a major label has made the production a little crisper, but that's something that isn't necessarily harmful or something better. Each song has a laid back beat, these aren't Waka Flocka beats, it's actually the opposite, with many of these beats following a nearly New Jack Swing style to them. "This Is The Life" and "What's What" are prime examples of the nu-jazz type vibe that Curren$y is rhyming against. It's the perfect compliment to his lazy voice talking about getting stacks and smoking weed. And while that may seem like a big cliche in hip-hop music, Curren$y comes off as more sincere than his peers, not only is it his life, he's good at it, and while many people will say that they don't give a fuck, Curren$y actually sounds believable.

Monsta Beatz produces most of this album with ease. Each beat he makes sounds as relaxed as it's MC, while he spits over how much he does indeed love the herb and his money (seriously, "Get Paid" is all about that and the only thing on this album close to being a banger). Most of the evokes a time back in the mid 90's when you were driving around the neighborhood with your buddies and had no money, no girls, and really, nothing to do. It has a unique summertime vibe which almost sounds too good to be true and like it was his summer album for this year (keep in mind, this is his second out of probably three releases this year). While he's never been one to get the party started, Curren$y seems like the guy on the couch just wanting to have a good time and trying to involve you.

#Jetsgo my be my go to song this summer, but really this album is almost tailor made for your bar-b-q's or hangouts, Curren$y isn't looking to get your ass up, he's smart enough to know that there's other guys out there to tell you so, he's just so interested in himself that he just has to tell you what he's up to, and honestly, despite his out pour of at least two albums a year, it almost seems like we can't get enough.

Caveman - Old Friend

As I was aimlessly scrolling through the MP3/Streams section of The Fader today, I stumbled across this
Now, I have to admit, I clicked on the link only because the band name sounded awesome. Seriously, Caveman is an awesome band name. When I wanted to start a band in 6th grade, that was one of the names that was mentioned. But, I am getting off topic.

The point is "Old Friend" is a really GREAT song. It's laid back and packs a punch. It's, in the words of Amber Bravo, "the kind of wistful, windows-down driving music you want to listen to as you hightail it out of the city for summer’s last gasp." It looks like Foster The People might have some competition for 'The Song of The Summer 2011'.

Wu-Tang + Fugazi = Wugazi?

Doomtree (Yeah, I've never heard of them either) have apparently taken The Wu Tang Clan's "C.R.E.A.M". and mashed it up with Fugazi's "I'm So Tired". This track is apparently part of a project entitled "13 Chambers".

Here is what Doomtree had to say about the song and the project on their website :

"It gives us great joy to unveil the first song off of an homage project that is quite close to all of us here at Doomtree:  WUGAZI (that’s Wu-Tang Clan and Fugazi in case you were born after the year 2000).  Many more details will be trickling out over the next two weeks, but for now click on the image below and be one of the first to check out the awesome “Sleep Rules Everything Around Me,” the first leak off of 13 Chambers.  Perfect for 4th of July BBQ’s. WUGAZI.  13 Chambers.  7/13/11.  Help us spread the word."
